Memorial Quilts
This is a king-sized quilt for a friend, who lost his wife at a too-young age. I used her clothing in this adaptation of a pickle-dish design. There’s even some of his wedding tux in here. The red circle symbolizes the couple, while the five other circles represent their five children. The red bands represent the holy spirit, holding all of them as they move forward without their beloved physically present.
Quilts made for daughters, from clothing of mother who passed away–the wife of my above-mentioned friend. You can see how designs can vary widely, and I take my cues in part from the palettes of the clothes themselves. The first quilt is self-designed. Bottom quilt is Denyse Schmidt’s pattern, Free-Wheeling Single Girl. Improvisational free-motion quilting.
Memorial quilt made from a beloved’s clothing. Free-motion quilting allows writing that reminds the living partner of their deep love.
